I’ve been jamming to Wish I Knew You on Spotify for over a week now. Always a bit late to the party, I just discovered this fun and funky tune by The Revivalists and I can’t get enough of it. Singing in the car. Dancing around the kitchen. It makes me feel so good!
We can all relate to the nostalgia and longing for things to have been different somehow. Missing what we never had, wanted to have. The knowing what we know now and realizing how things might have been, if only. It’s okay to do that a bit now and then. Wishful, wistful feelings have a place and a purpose.
Being a young teen during the dawn of MTV, I always want to check out music videos. This one gave me all the fantastic feels. The unabashed, pure joy! That’s the way I want to live and be. To see a mixed race couple openly celebrating and being celebrated brings happiness to my heart. Freedom to love and be loved. As much as anything, that is a Universal Right and need of everyone. Wouldn’t have been like this in 1969 (the HS class reunion featured in the video) or 1989 (my time in high school). Almost 30 years later and, although hatred and racism are far from eradicated, there are more openly beautiful love connections, be they of race, orientation, whatever!
Here are the lyrics and a link to the video. Enjoy!
Wish I Knew You
You shine like a star
You know who you are
You’re everything beautiful
She’s hot, hot like the sun
The loneliest one
Still everything beautiful
Well I’ll be god damned
You’re standing at my door
We stayed up in the city
Until the stars lost the war
So Friday night, holy ghost
Take me to your level
Show me the one I need the most
I need the most
I wish I knew you when I was young
We could’ve got so high
Now we’re here it’s been so long
Two strangers in the bright lights
Oh I hope you don’t mind
We can share my mood yeah
Two strangers in the bright lights
I wish I knew you
I wish I knew you
Oh I wish I knew you when I was young
Truth, it’s all that you need
You bury that seed
It’s everything beautiful
And that sound comes from the underground
It’s all inside you now
It’s everything beautiful
But what you, what you, what you, what you running from?
And they got, they got, they got, they got you on the run?
So Friday night
Holy ghost
Take me to your level
Show me the one I need the most
I need the most
I wish I knew you when I was young
We could’ve got so high
Now we’re here it’s been so long
Two strangers in the bright lights
Oh and I hope you don’t mind
We can share my mood, yeah
Two strangers in the bright lights
I wish I knew you
I wish I knew you
Oh I wish I knew you when I was young
Maybe we can share my mood
Hmm hmm hmm
Maybe we can share my mood
Hmm hmm hmm
Maybe we can share my mood
Hmm hmm hmm
I wish I knew you when I was young
We could’ve got so high
Now we’re here it’s been so long
Two strangers in the bright lights
Oh and I hope you don’t mind
We can share my mood, yeah
Two strangers in the bright lights
I wish I knew you
I wish I knew you
Oh I wish I knew you when I was young

I’m a fan of their jam band style of collaboration and performance. This is an interesting Billboard article. Annoying that the interviewer misstated the name of their album several times though. It’s Men Amongst Mountains. I’m digging the entire album and look forward to checking out more of their art.
What are some inspiring songs you love? Please share in the comments so I can keep improving my playlists. Thanks.
